In the Garden

Contrast, repeating patterns, attention to intricate details. No humans, just nature. These features of Islamic art inspired a series of photographs taken in the wonderful gardens of Marrakesh.  After spending a few days there, I can clearly see how Monet managed to paint is garden at Giverny for 12 years, creating a wonderful symbiosis between his garden and his art.

One of the motivations behind my photography is to induce calm through contemplation. I like to create images that one can look at for a long time because the scene, the colors or the patterns induce the mind to enter a meditative mode. No stories, no action, no movement. Just mindfulness. Just presence.

Many things in Morocco contribute to enter such a meditative state: the gardens with scents of flowers, and the murmur of flowing water and birdsong all around you. The architecture, walling off the outside world and privileging the interior courtyard where silence reigns. The lack of hurry and the conversation between neighbors, families and friends in the streets, people taking time to greet each other and find out how they are. The pauses during the day to drink tea or pray.

The photographs presented here are a result of this mindset. I hope you enjoy them. Feedback is always appreciated.
